Niger is a land-locked country in the Sahel region bordering Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Mali. The country is affected in the one hand by volatile weather conditions and in the other hand by security crisis. More than 4 million people in Niger were either somehow or strongly affected by food insecurity. At the same time the repeated attacks against the security forces and civilians have also led the country into a growing domestic insecurity.

Niger (with Search For Common Ground):

In the current country context, SeeD has been working with Search for Common Ground and UNICEF to report on access to education in an environment plagued by insecurities and various threats. Inevitably, such environment impeded on general access to education in the Diffa region by constraining parental decisions on schooling and the functionality of schools.

Niger (with Department of Peace Operations):

Initiated by the United Nations Department of Peace Operations (DPO), this project aims to increase understanding on the link between climate change and recruitment patterns of armed groups with a focus on the Sahel. As a pilot project, this study will be focused on the Tillaberi region in Niger. The objective of the project is to approach climate change from a Disarmament Demobilization Reintegration (DDR) perspective and focus on the ways in which grievances, vulnerabilities and tensions driven by climate change, influence recruitment patterns by armed groups and affect communities with a focus on the ways in which they affect men and women differently. This project will result in the development of a diagnostic and predictive analytical tool containing specific indicators that will be used to develop DDR training and Community Violence Reduction (CVR) interventions.
